1837, the Château de la Verrerie became the residence
of the Schneider family, France's legendary foundry
dynasty.
In 1863, a
new building was added to house the foundry's
pharmacy, which was transferred to the newly-built
Hôtel Dieu in 1894. The space formerly occupied
by the pharmacy was then used as headquarters
by the foundry's workers' club and offered fencing,
billiards, games rooms, and an impressive library.
In 1922, the workers'
club was turned into a guest house for
customers and important visitors and was named
La Petite Verrerie.
